Maltese Pilgrims Journey Along the Cammino di San Benedetto
A group of young Maltese pilgrims, arranged and led by the MSSP Oratory Youth, recently concluded a 10-day expedition along the historic Cammino di San Benedetto, an ancient walking route in central Italy filled with monastic tradition and spiritual significance.
A Transformative Experience
What started as a physical challenge navigating through picturesque hills, tranquil forests, and medieval towns evolved into a journey of profound spiritual awakening, fostering strength in faith, identity, and community.
Journey Begins
The group of 15 commenced their pilgrimage in Rome on Easter Monday, initiating their adventure at St. Peter’s Basilica by passing through the Holy Door—a symbol of welcoming grace and renewal. This moment marked the profound commencement of their shared spiritual journey.
Moments of Reflection
On the same morning, news of Pope Francis’s sudden death cast a solemn shadow over the pilgrims. A participant expressed that it felt as if the Church compelled them to undertake this journey in unity with a grieving world.
Connection with Nature
As they departed the city, the pilgrims transitioned into the rugged beauty of the Apennine countryside. The distractions of modern life were replaced by the soothing sounds of nature, the harmony of footsteps, and the meditative act of walking. They meandered through ancient monasteries and quiet villages, embodying the spirit of St. Benedict.
Discovering Inner Strength
The pilgrimage represented not just a geographical crossing, but also a deep exploration of personal hearts. Participants discovered resilience within themselves while confronting the physical strains of blisters and fatigue. Each day began with introspective reflection on Benedictine spirituality, followed by prayer, silence, and contemplation.
A Journey of Hope
Upon reaching the Abbey of Montecassino, the cradle of Benedictine life, they paused for a final prayer, embodying an unspoken change within. Back home, the lessons learned during the pilgrimage resonate deeply, revealing that growth occurs within the journey, not just the destination. The words of the late Pope Francis encouraging all to be “pilgrims of hope” now hold tangible meaning for these youths, reflecting their transformative experience, step by step.
