Home | Newsletters & Shorts | DW Weekly #213 – The UAE’s AI campus | Cybersecurity’s turbulent sea | The race for space, quantum, and supercomputing

The UAE’s Ambitious AI Campus

The United Arab Emirates is set to establish the largest AI campus outside the USA. This expansive project spans 10 square miles and includes a 5-gigawatt facility in Abu Dhabi, spearheaded by G42, bolstered by a $200 billion investment forged during President Trump’s Gulf tour as part of the US-UAE AI Acceleration Partnership.

Embracing Cryptocurrency

In addition to its advancements in AI, the UAE is also opening its doors to cryptocurrency. Ripple has launched a cross-border blockchain payment system in the region, aiming to enhance cryptocurrency adoption and integration in financial transactions.

Current Cybersecurity Challenges

The cybersecurity landscape has been tumultuous recently, with various threats and changes shaping AI governance and digital policies globally. Japan has notably enacted its Active Cyberdefence Law, which allows for preemptive offensive cyber operations, marking a significant departure from its historical pacifism in the face of increasing state-sponsored threats from nations like China and Russia.

The Global Race for Technological Supremacy

Competition in space, quantum technologies, and supercomputing is intensifying worldwide. China is leading with the launch of its AI-powered satellites, creating an orbital supercomputer network capable of managing extensive datasets and enhancing its strategic capabilities in AI-enabled defense and communications.

Advancements in Quantum Computing

In the realm of quantum technology, Google has achieved a milestone with a new quantum chip that can simulate complex systems, suggesting transformative possibilities for quantum computing that could significantly impact AI innovations in the future.

Notable Digital Policy Developments

President Trump is poised to sign the Take It Down Act, a legislation intended to criminalize the sharing of explicit images—whether real or AI-generated—without consent, indicating a keen focus on protecting individuals’ rights in the digital landscape.

Upcoming Events and Initiatives

A briefing for diplomats on the UN80 Initiative, AI, and digital governance is scheduled for May 28. Additionally, UNHCR and other major organizations will officially launch the Digital Hub of Treasury Solutions (DHoTS) during an event aimed at discussing how digital innovation is transforming aid delivery.
